Ensemble MAE New Narratives

Verhalende muziek werd in de 20e eeuw beschouwd als een achterhaalde
methode om iets uit te drukken. Met de opkomst van visuele en digitale
media zijn nieuwe wijzen van vertellen in de hedendaagse muziek ontstaan.
In het programma New Narratives presenteert het Ensemble MAE deze
'nieuwe vertellingen' met muziek en beeldprojecties.

Yannis Kyriakides componeerde 'Dreams of the 
Blind' (2007), gebaseerd op de dromen van 
blinden. Dit nieuwe grote werk gaat over de 
beperkingen van
taal om dromen te beschrijven en de 
verbeeldingskracht van muziek die dromen zowel 
kan verhullen als verhelderen.

Arnoud Noordegraaf, een componist en filmmaker 
die in zijn werk niet bang is om verhalen te 
vertellen, maakte speciaal voor dit programma het 
intrigerende werk 'Interim' (2007), dat het 
concept van zwaartekracht in visuele en klinkende 
dimensies toont.

De conceptuele componist, fotograaf en filmmaker 
Luiz Henrique Yudo legt het Ensemble MAE een 
videopartituur van twee delen 'Saint Omer' en 'El 
Camino' (2007) voor. Aan de hand van beelden van 
het 13e eeuwse gangenstelsel van Notre Dame in 
Saint Omer en de pelgrimstocht naar Santiago de 
Compostella vinden de musici hun weg door de 
compositie.

'The Secrets of Mexuality' (2003) is een 
razendsnelle montage die de seksuele lading in 
Mexicaans worstelen en kitsch schilderijen tot 
onderwerp heeft, een virtuoos werk van componist 
Juan Felipe Waller en beeldend kunstenaar Martha 
Colburn.

Componist David Dramm en filmmaker David Lammers, 
die ook samenwerkten in de speelfilm Langer 
Licht, maakten in 2002 'Helen Barbara', een 
indringend portret van een meisje dat zonder gêne 
zichzelf en de toeschouwer onderzoekt en begeleid 
door het ensemble een liedje zingt dat steeds 
luider
en heftiger wordt.

Op de premiere van New Narratives in Paradiso 
presenteert het Ensemble MAE een event met het 
audiovisuele werk van de Noorse videokunstenaar 
HC Gilje en geluidskunstenaar Justin Bennett.

Ensemble MAE New Narratives

Narrativity in music has been regarded by 20th 
century modernity unfavorably, as an outdated 
mode of expression. Yet with the rise of visual 
media in the concert environment the relation 
between music and non-musical references is on 
the rise. In the programme New Narratives the 
Ensemble MAE
will present works that deal with the idea of new 
narratives, with both music and visual 
projections.

Yannis Kyriakides will present a new large scale 
work, 'Dreams of the Blind' (2007). This piece is 
about the limits of what language can express of 
dream sensations and how music can both cloud and 
clarify it.

Arnoud Noordegraaf, a composer and film maker who 
doesn't shy away from using narrative in his work 
wrote specifically for this programme the 
intruiging work 'Interim' (2007), that explores 
the concept of gravity in visual and sound 
dimensions.

The conceptual composer, photographer and film 
maker Luiz Henrique Yudo presents the ensemble a 
video score of two parts, 'Saint Omer' en 'El 
Camino' (2007). Using images of the 13th century 
maze at Notre-Dame in Saint-Omer and the famous 
pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, the 
musicians find their way through the composition.

'The Secrets of Mexuality' (2003) is a rapid 
montage exploring sexuality in the specific 
realms of Mexican wrestling and kitsch paintings, 
a virtuousic work bu composer Juan Felipe Waller 
and visual artist Martha Colburn.

Composer David Dramm and film maker David 
Lammers, who also collaborated on the feature 
film Langer Licht, made 'Helen Barbara' in 2002, 
a charged portrait of a girl that explores 
herself and the spectator without restraint and 
sings a song that, accompanied by the ensemble, 
becomes louder and wilder.

On the premiere of New Narratives in Paradiso, 
Ensemble MAE presents an event in which also the 
audiovisual work of Norwegian video artist HC 
Gilje and sound artist Justin Bennett is 
presented.
