The Night Of The Unexpected
van Tap Hop naar Lap Bop

Op donderdag 8 september vindt onder redactie van 
Roland Spekle The Night Of The Unexpected plaats. 
In dit festival van één nacht krijgen de 
verscheidenheid en dynamiek die de hedendaagse 
muziekpraktijk kenmerken, gestalte. Het zal 
daarbij zowel gaan om gecomponeerde muziek als om 
geïmproviseerde muziek, elektronische dansmuziek 
of performances waarin muziek met visuele 
uitingen wordt gecombineerd. Voor de Night is een 
unieke presentatiewijze ontwikkeld die een 
onverwachte, directe relatie tussen publiek en 
artiesten creëert. Het programma wordt in een 
strak geregisseerde opeenvolging van korte, 
puntige optredens zonder pauzes gepresenteerd. 
Vaak wordt daarbij het podium als het 
traditionele domein van de artiest verlaten en 
wordt gebruik gemaakt van de specifieke 
mogelijkheden die het gebouw biedt. Het Engelse 
muziektijdschrift The WIRE: "The real starting 
point for the unexpected was the forceful ground 
on which the disperate techniques and genres 
intersected and collided with each other 
throughout the evening."

The Night of the Unexpected is een vast onderdeel 
van de Gaudeamus Muziekweek, waarin de uitersten 
van verschillende hedendaagse muzikale stromingen 
in een ongebruikelijke vorm bijeengebracht worden.

The Night of the Unexpected 2005 heeft de volgende onderdelen:
L'explicateur is een collage van oude 
filmbeelden, met een mimerol van Hans Dagelet en 
muziek van Spinvis en ensemble.
Het Amstel Saxofoonkwartet speelt Xas van Iannis 
Xenakis en Voices from Nowhere van Vytautas 
Germanavicious
Pow Ensemble van Luc Houtkamp - winnaar van de 
Boy Edgarprijs - presenteert Tap Hop met real 
time elektronica en tap dance.
Het Helios kamerkoor o.l.v. Wolfgang Lange zingt Agnus Dei van Samuel Barber
Het Nederlandse Circle Percussion zal je invoeren 
in de Japanse percussietraditie
Pan Sonic, Finse pioniers van stoïcijnse 
electronica en experimentele techno met extreme 
frequenties
Four Tet maakt ongrijpbare, soms extatische, 
ritmische muziek, waarin instrumentale 
brokstukken van free jazz, gospel en gamelan te 
herkennen zijn.
Supersilent, Noorse nieuwlichters van de jazz en 
elektronica, soms klassiek dan weer heftig 
ontsporend en abstract.
Gustav is de act van de innemende 
singer-songwriter Eva Jantschisch die onder deze 
naam haar maatschappijkritische teksten brengt in 
een bedding van elektronica en ongebruikelijke 
instrumentatie.
De legendarische saxofonist Evan Parker maakt 
tranceopwekkende klanken die door de 
elektronische musicus Joel Ryan worden bewerkt
Joel Ryan en Keir Neuringer spelen The Wolfman 
van Robert Ashley, een zeer vroeg werk van deze 
Amerikaanse componist voor stem en feedback.
Lap Bop is de naam die Florintintin aan zijn live 
op de laptop gecreëerde remix van jazzsamples 
geeft.

Het programma begint om 20.30 uur met Pan Sonic, 
Spinvis, Pow Ensemble en Supersilent.

composities van jonge internationale componisten

The Night of the Unexpected
from Tap Hop to Lap Bop

On Thursday 8 September the Night of the 
Unexpected will take place in Paradiso, 
Amsterdam, curated by Roland Spekle. In this 
festival of one night, the diversity and dynamics 
that characterise contemporary music practice 
will be fully explored. Composed music, 
improvised music, electronic dance music and 
performances in which music is combined with 
visual work will be presented. For this event, a 
specific manner of presentation has been 
developed that creates an unexpected, direct 
relationship between audience and artists. The 
programme consists of a series of short 
performances without intermissions, and the stage 
as the traditional domain of the artist is often 
traded in for a position closer to the audience, 
or one that uses the specific characteristics of 
the building.

The Night of the Unexpected is part of the 
international Gaudemus Music Week, and focuses on 
the extremes of the diverse styles in 
contemporary music, combining and presenting them 
in an unexpected way.

The Night of the Unexpected 2005 consists of:

L'explicateur is a collage of old film images 
borrowed from the archives of the Dutch Film 
Museum, with the poetic music of Spinvis and his 
ensemble, one of Holland's most inspiring 
alternative pop musicians, and a mime role by 
Dutch actor / musician Hans Dagelet.
The Amstel Saxophone Quartet, the young and 
promising group that recently won various 
international prizes, will perform Xas by Iannis 
Xenakis and Voices from Nowhere by the Lithuanian 
composer Vytautas Germanavicious.
The Helios Chamber Choir directed by Wolfgang 
Lange will sing Agnus Dei by Samuel Barber.
The Pow Ensemble by the Dutch saxophonist and 
electronic musician Luc Houtkamp presents Tap 
Hop, in which real-time electronica and tap dance 
are merged.
The Dutch Circle Percussion.will introduce you 
into Japanese percussion traditions
Pan Sonic, Finnish pioneers of stoic electronica 
and experimental techno with extreme frequencies, 
will perform two sets.
Four Tet produces uncategorisable, sometimes 
ecstatic, rhythmical music, in which instrumental 
elements of free jazz, gospel and gamelan shine 
through.
Supersilent, the Norwegian group that merges jazz 
and electronica, sometimes sound almost classical 
right before they derail into abstract, stormy 
clouds of sound.
Gustav is the alias of the spellbinding 
singer-songwriter Eva Jantschisch who produces 
lyrics, often with a critical political 
undertone, in a bedding of electronica and 
unusual instruments.
The already legendary saxophonist Evan Parker 
produces sounds that are treated electronically 
in real time by Joel Ryan, creating 
trance-inducing layers of sound.
Joel Ryan and Keir Neuringer will perform The 
Wolfman of Robert Ashley, a very early work for 
voice and feedback by this American composer.
Lap Bop is the coinage that Florintintin invented 
for his remix of samples of jazz standards that 
he creates with his laptop.

The programme will start at 20.30 with Pan Sonic, 
Spinvis, Pow Ensemble and Supersilent.

The Night of the Unexpected is a production of 
Gaudeamus in collaboration with Steim and 
Paradiso, and is a part of the international 
Gaudeamus Music Week, in which compositions by 
young international composers are performed.
