It was pointed out to me that I forgot to include the link to Gebru and
Torres' article. It is here, available in HTML and PDF format:
https://www.firstmonday.org/ojs/index.php/fm/article/view/
I also recommend Adam Becker's "More Everything Forever: AI Overlords,
Space Empires, and Silicon Valley's Crusade to Control the Fate of
Humanity" which goes a long way towards exploring the very strange
science fiction world views of the Silicon Valley elite.
Among other things, he demonstrates that "Singulitarianism" (think Ray
Kurzweil) and the related belief in a total, gamechanging "AGI" with
"recursive self-improvement" is really a variant of - not just similar
to, but directly descended from - evangelical Christianity.
Which might go a long way towards explaining all their talk about
possible "AI" doomsday scenarios.
Best,
Carsten
